From Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type

“Farmer Brown has a problem. His cows like to type. All day long he hears Click, Clack, Moo. Click, Clack, Moo. Clickety, Clack, Moo.”

Subjects and Themes

Doreen Cronin’s Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type is a tale about what happens when a bunch of literate cows with opinions get access to a typewriter. What follows is a series of back and forth negotiations between the barnyard animals and Farmer Brown that is sure to get a lot of laughs during story time.

Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type doesn’t offer a deeper theme or moral, but it’s lighthearted subject is great for an easy read with kids 4 – 7. The book’s amusing premise is geared towards making story time fun, which is why we featured it as one of our top funny stories for kids.

Characters

The characters in Click, Clack, Moo make the book so appealing for younger audiences. Children will surely be entertained by the hilarious negotiations between Farmer Brown and the Cows (as well as my personal favorite, the advantageous Duck). The characters popularity is what has also led to numerous other books in the series by author Doreen Cronin.

Children’s books featuring animals as main characters is a popular choice for many authors. Click, Clack, Moo‘s use of farm animals make it ideal for grabbing the attention of preschool and young elementary kids.

Illustrations

Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type is illustrated by Betsy Lewin, who has more than 40 titles to her name. Her trademark watercolor illustrations allow it to easily stand out from many other children’s books.

Lewin’s use of color and vivid expression on the character’s faces establish the drama between the main characters. The connection between the text and the illustrations make it easy for young readers to follow along with the story.

Awards and Accomplishments

The book’s most notable achievement is the 2001 Caldecott Honor. Caldecott Honors go to illustrators responsible for the “most distinguished” picture books of the year.

The book is also highlighted as a ‘Teacher’s Top 100 Books for Children‘ by the National Education Association.
