Summary

From the four part Moneybunny books series, author/illustrator Cinders McLeod presents Earn It!

Bun loves to sing and has dreams of becoming rich and famous.  To her, it should be an easy feat since her mom can just drive her to concerts to perform! But Bun's mom gives her a bit of a reality check by explaining that becoming a famous singer takes time, hard work and lots of practice.  Through helping her mom in the garden to earn an allowance and practicing her singing at school concerts, Bun can get on the track to realizing her dreams of fame and fortune!

Earn It! is a great book for preschool and younger elementary age children to help stress the message of earning success through hard work and dedication.  The book helps kids become familiar with saving money and even has some simple math exercises within the story.  It's a simple story with a big lesson that fits perfectly among the other books in the series.

Subjects Covered

Pride and Independence

The main theme of Earn It! is all about working hard and having pride in your accomplishments.

In the story, we see Bun expressing her desire to become rich and famous.  Initially, she doesn't understand that this doesn't just happen overnight and expects immediate results.  After her mother explains the work and practice she needs to put in to make it a reality, Bun is somewhat discouraged.  However, by the end of the book, we see her reaching some of her early milestones and reacting with a sense of pride and independence.

The book's important message is presented in a simplified manner that is sure to resonate with children 4 - 6 years old.

Intro to Financial Literacy

Although it may not be to the same extent as it's sister book, Spend It!, Earn It! gives kids an introduction to the subject of money.

After Bun expresses her desire to become a famous singer, her mother explains she'll need to save her money to afford singing lessons.  While Bun currently earns an allowance for helping her mother, her wish to expedite her savings leads to her taking on extra chores to earn more money.  Even though her modest earnings won't make her famous overnight, it does get her closer to her goals, which fits with the larger narrative of the book.

Additionally, there are some simple math exercises within the book that are helpful for kids who have recently started learning addition and subtraction.
