What makes Because a great book?

Subject/Theme

For those familiar with the collection of author Mo Willems, they’d likely expect Because to be lighthearted and full of his trademark comedy.  Instead, Because breaks from Willems’ traditional writing style and tells a much more inspirational story.

The start of the book introduces a young girl who gets a last minute invite to the symphony.  As she watches and listens to the beautiful music, her imagination is captured and we see how she builds off of this new love to ultimately become a successful conductor.

The story told by Willems is arguably his most impressive work (which says a lot given his impressive catalog of best-sellers).  Because is beautifully constructed as the reader sees how chance, love, hard-work and persistence all play a role in achieving your dreams.  Willems does an excellent job of tying together each step in the little girl’s journey as we see her grow up into a huge success.

The story is a great option for music-lovers or for any parents looking for books about inspiration.

Illustrations

Because is beautifully illustrated by Amber Ren (in her debut book).  Her use of bright colors and vivid detail partner perfectly with Willems’ creative and well-constructed story.  Aside from the obvious beauty of Ren’s work, the pictures also allow young readers to easily follow along with the story. This is great for keeping engagement and enthusiasm high.

The impressive color and magnificent imagery throughout really highlight Ren’s diverse background and can easily be seen by looking at the book’s cover art.  Ren’s most impressive artwork within the books comes about halfway through when the orchestra hits their peak note.  You can see this page by visiting Ren’s illustration portfolio on her personal site.

When it comes to choosing books with our favorite illustrations, Because is easily one of the first picture books that come to mind.

Age Group

Because is a great option for all families because it has appeal to multiple age groups.

Toddlers will love the colorful pictures and beautiful artwork by illustrator Amber Ren.  Even if the larger story doesn’t resonate for them, the story is still easy to follow along with thanks to the illustrations.

Preschoolers and elementary children will love Mo Willems‘ inspirational story.  The combination of the elegant subject and stunning illustrations will surely make this a favorite in the bedtime story rotation for years to come.

Because offers unique appeal to parents as well, particularly those with a love for music.  This has easily been one of my favorites to include in our story time rotation since its debut.
